Perched Rufous Hummingbird

Male rufous hummingbird at rest

I captured this photograph of a male Rufous hummingbird perched on a branch as he was resting after a long migration from Mexico to his spring and summer home on the west coast of Canada. This handsome hummer allowed me to sit quite close to him and photograph him freely. In the background are the branches of an oceanspray (ironwood) bush where hummingbirds often frequented, only to dive bomb any intruders to the feeder that was hung nearby. I liked the way the out of focus branches created a kind of batik effect that also matched the hummingbird’s coloring.
