A Tired Owl

A barred owl yawning

Or is he maybe saying, “Leave me alone!” to the robin in the background, who had just finished dive bombing him endlessly while he tried to catch a nap?

It was a fascinating scene that unfolded on one of my regular hikes through fields and forests on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, Canada. In fact, this was the way I often managed to spot and photograph owls…by following the hectic enraged chirping of robins as they attacked the owl who was almost always just trying to sleep.

Barred owls can be seen much more often in daylight hours in the spring as they need to hunt in order to feed their young.
